Josef Konrad

Aug. 10, 1899 in Križ nad Hronom, Slovakia
June 6, 1974 in Kingston upon Hull, United Kingdom

After completing his studies in Brno in 1924, Josef Konrad moved first to France and later to Bratislava. During this period, he designed buildings that embodied modernism. As he had also studied engineering, he took a keen interest in technical interior fittings. Alongside expensive marble, he also used materials such as rubber. His buildings furthermore featured innovations such as waste chutes, central heating, and air conditioning. In 1939, he emigrated to the United Kingdom, as Slovakia was becoming fascist and he was probably of Jewish background. Thereafter, he worked both as a teacher at the university and as a self-employed architect.
